Evaluation of lipid profile and atherogenic index of plasma among stroke patients (AIP= Log TG/HDL-C)

The role of the Log triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein?cholesterol was defined as an atherogenic index (AIP or atherogenic index of plasma) and especially as an important risk factor for ischemic myocardial infarction. The aim of our study is to evaluate the AIP and determine the lipid profile among stroke victims in black populations. It is a descriptive and analytical case-control cross-sectorial study, on 64 stroke patients confirmed by a cerebral Computerized Tomography (CT) at the Neurology clinic of Fann. The lipid parameters were evaluated from stroke patients and witness-cases blood samples, in order to establish AIP. Dosages of cholesterol, HDL-C and triglycerides were realized from a Cobas C-311. The patients were aged between 24 and 89 years old, with an average of 63.73 y/o, and a sex ratio of 0.88. 68.75% had ischemic stroke, 25% hemorrhagic stroke, and 6.25% were unclassified. Comparing the averages of lipid parameters between controls and patients showed a significant HDL cholesterolemia difference (P=0.003) and for the triglycerides (P=0.04). A nonsignificant difference has been found for the total cholesterolemia (P=0.67) and for the LDL cholesterolemia (P=0.57). Comparison of AIP values of stroke patients and controls showed a significant difference (P=0.002). When the repartition was made based on the type of stroke, a significant difference has been found among ischemic stroke patients compared to controls (P=0.002), but not in victims of hemorrhagic stroke (P=0.4). These results show lipid abnormalities in stroke patients and suggest that AIP could be used as a predictive marker for the occurrence of ischemic stroke.
