The influenceofplasmadynamicsonthegrowthofSm0.55Nd0.45NiO3 solid solution duringpulsedlaserdeposition

We reportonthepresenceofaninterestingcross-correlationamongthedepositionparameters,which are usuallyoverlookedintheusualempiricalapproachusedbypulsedlaserdepositiongrowers.The fast intensified-charge-coupled-device(ICCD)photographyimagingstudiesoftheplasmageneratedby the KrFexcimerlaserablationofSm1xNdxNiO3 at x¼0.45 inthepresenceofoxygenbackgroundgases at differentpressuresisreported.Theexperimentallydeterminedbehavioursarecomparedwiththe predictionsofananalyticalmodel,whichgivesacompletedescriptionoftheexpansionoftheplume and withsomerecentresultsreportedintheliterature.Evidenceofthestronginfluenceofthe expansionplasmaregimewasfound,whichshowedthatitisnotsimplyrelatedtotheoverallreactive gas content.Ourfindingsdemonstratethattheoptimisationofthepulsedlaserdepositionparameters, such asgaspressure,shouldbeperformedalsotakingintoaccountthechemicalpressureinducedby the substratenature.Theanalysisoftheexperimentalresultsallowedustoestimatetheaverage depositionoxygenpressureforSm0.55Nd0.45NiO3 in thetypicalrangeusedforPulsedLaserDeposition (PLD) ofcomplexoxides,showingthatthehigherthedepositionpressure,thebetterthecrystallinity.
