Coastal erosion and ShorelineS protection models on the sandy beach of Saly, Petite Côte, Senegal

Morphodynamic monitoring of the sandy Saly coast, located on the Petite Côte of Senegal was done using both aerial images and ShorelineS model. This morphodynamic model is developed by IHE Delft and Deltares. It uses a flexible, free coastline grid. The results show a coastline with a northwestern sector in accretion and a southeastern sector in erosion, an evolution linked to the construction of groins in the first sector. Comparison of measured and simulated change rates for the 2003-2016 period, allowed the determination of the impacts of protective structures on the morphological evolution of the coastline. In order to propose a strategy for the coastline defense and to make recommendations for coastal protection, six protection scenarios using a combination or a single type of defense structure have been established and the evolution of the coastline projected until 2035.
