Formalizing Small and Women-Led Businnesses in West Africa : Major Approaches and Their Limitations
This article is about policies designed for the small informal businesses
in Africa, focusing on women-led enterprises, in order to
assist them grow and eventually formalize. Following a thorough
discussion on various modalities of support to such businesses,
we underscore, the role of skills development in the areas of
vocational training and “soft skills” development as an important
way of empowering small and female entrepreneurs. We also discuss
various financing mechanisms beyond standard microfinance
schemes to improve uptake and boost investment and innovation
among this category of firms.
