LE DEVELOPPEMENT PSYCHOMOTEUR DES TOUT-PETITS EN MILIEU WOLOF

The psychomotor development of the baby, as a community good embodying hope and continuity in Wolof, involves socio-cultural practices identified and described through a focus group organized in Niakhene. For the most part, deprivation of the mother's movements at certain times, the prohibition to be bareheaded, the wearing of gray-gray, etc. for the normal course of pregnancy, are requirements. On the mystical protection of the pregnant woman depends the physical and mental state of the baby. The latter, from its birth to 18 months, passes through five stages: Leer or liir, Cuxx, Seppèen, Ndoxtan and Perantal respectively characterized by involuntary and voluntary prehension, sitting, moving on 4 legs (raam), standing with the first 2 steps and correct walking. These motor skills are favored by breast feeding, local cereal porridge, toddler exercise and proper massage. In case of delay or blockage, gray-gray, holy water, maraboutique incantations, stems of "lawtan" plants and sweeping of the footprints of the first steps of the child are the culturally accepted remedies.
