Allium sativum can reduce blood viscosity and erythrocytary falciformation in sickle cell disease.

Objectif : The aim of our study was to determine whether an hydro-alcoolic extract of Allium sativum is able to reduce blood viscosity and prevent falciformation of erythrocytes in sickle cell disease. Methods : Emmel Tests were performed with natrium metabisulfite (2%) in normal sujects (AA), heterozygote sickle cell disease carriers (AS) and homozygote sickle cell disease patients (SS). Tests were performed in basal stade, after incubation with physiological solution and after incubation with several concentrations of hydro-alcoolic extract of Allium sativum. Blood viscosity measures were performed in total blood (AA, AS, SS) after incubation with physiological solution and with hydro-alcoolic extract of Allium sativum (1 mg/ml). Results: Hydro-alcoolic extract of Allium sativum reduces significantly falciformation in sickle cell disease. The reduction of sickle cells induced by the extract was doses-dependent in SS sujects.
