A Man in His City. Maurice Gueye of Rufisque, Senegal (1925-1935)

Maurice Gueye was mayor of Rufisque from 1925 to 1929 and from 1932 to 1935, after a withdrawal from the political life, after his revocation on January 31, 1929. The evocation of his memory remains always suspect. We know the reason: in the aftermath of the World War II, he went back to the political life and will be a mayor from 1945 to 1960, with a municipal management deeply criticized. Here it is about understanding Maurice Gueye during the interwar period as a man of power in the city, questioning the action and ambitions of this political man, but also posing the double hypothesis: on the one hand, that the municipal institution is an administrative and political place, therefore a place of power and on the other hand, that the occupation of the municipal administration creates, or can create, men of power.
