Preparation and physical and electrochemical characterization of nickel cobaltites”

Mixed oxides of spinel type NixCo3-xO4 with 0 ? x ? 2.5 have been synthesized via several methods. We investigated their physicochemical properties using X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method and scanning electron microscopy. Their electrocatalytic performances have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, steady state measurements and roughness factor. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that the oxides crystallize in a cubic spinel phase with a unit lattice parameter which increases with x and is function of the preparation method. The electrochemical surface area of the powders was estimated from the double layer capacitance, characterized through cyclic voltammograms. Oxides prepared by Pechini synthesis present larger surface area, higher electrical conductivity, roughness electrochemical activities. It seems that catalytical properties are essentially related to real surface area.
