Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture Assessment Workshop

A three-day workshop on urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) was held at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya from 24–26 October 2011. The purpose of the workshop was to exchange information and share knowledge related to assessments of UPA and climate change currently underway in cities across West Africa, East Africa and South Asia. The three-day workshop brought together eight of the nine cities where assessments are taking place. City teams present at the meeting were from West Africa (Tamale, Ibadan, and Dakar), East Africa (Kampala, Dar es Salaam, and Addis Ababa) and South Asia (Dhaka and Chennai). The Kathmandu team was unable to attend. The assessments, which began in 2011 and will conclure in 2012, examine the sustainability of UPA in the face of climate change, rapid urbanization, and subsequent changes to land and water resources.
